SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2010: PVC Candle Make & Take:
by Hector Turner
Mark you calendars for this Fall Make & Take!
September 19th, 2010 1-4 PM at the Home of Ghoul Friday
Limited class size: 15
Create ultra-realistic prop candles quickly & easily. Featuring authentic drips these easy to
make candles will add ambience to any graveyard or haunted mansion scene. Using ordinary LED battery powered tea lights and
a hot glue gun you can turn regular PVC pipe into amazingly realistic pillar candles. This will be a hands-on seminar with
each student being given enough tools & supplies to make 4-5 candles in the afternoon.
Cost $15.00
Includes pre-cut PVC pipe & foam
Final finishing and staining will be demonstrated but due to the room requirements & drying
time you will need to finish the spray painting at home.
Registration now open until September 17, 2010
Space will be limited to 15 people and registration will be on a first come/first served basis.
WHAT TO BRING:
SUPPLY LIST: You will be responsible to bring the following items with you. I might have some extra glue
sticks or LED tea-lights for sale but do not count on that.
• Hot Glue Gun
- preferably a high heat or dual heat model as a small, low temp glue gun will not heat the glue up enough to get realistic
drips.
• Glue Sticks - bring lots - expect to use between 3 - 6 sticks
per candle, more if they are the short ones
• 5-6 LED tea lights
- Dollarrama for the cheap ones or Michael's for the better ones.
- I'm told Costco currently has a set of 28 LED tea-lights and batteries available. If you can get this do so, it's the best
value for the money and you'll be able to make lots of candles.
• a short extension cord or powerbar if
you can to hook up your glue gun • any candle holders you would like to place your candles on as an option.
This way you can get it to drip down onto the holder in a realistic manner. • (optional) a small
silicone glue surface or baking sheet - this is great to work on as the hot glue doesn't
really stick to it, making it easy to have drips pool around the foot of the candle.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: You will be given approx.
5-6 pieces of PVC pipe cut to random lengths, one large diameter coupling for a larger candle and pipe insulation as filler/tea-light
support. We will discuss painting methods but due to time and location restrictions will not be doing the final painting.
I will demonstrate aging techniques on a pre-painted sample. You should be able to finish (with the exception
of painting) 5-6 candles easily. You can leave them as individual candles or make a grouping. Bring extra tea-lights if you
can to make some completely melted candle stubs.
Drinks and light snacks to be supplied.
Location:
379 Strathmore Blvd.
Here's the directions. Home of Ghoul Friday
Once again, parking is free on my street and
the side streets, and it's unlimited hours on Sunday (before midnight). If for some reason people can't find a parking
spot, there is a Green P parking lot behind my house beside the Shoppers Drugmart on Danforth (just east of Coxwell).
Coming
from the 401:
South on the Don Valley Parkway. Exit Don Mills South (which is the second Don Mills exit). Follow the
curve to the light at O'Connor. Turn left (east) at O'Connor. Turn right (south) at Coxwell (there are Shell & Esso gas
stations on the corners). Take Coxwell past the Hospital, down toward Danforth. Strathmore is the last street BEFORE Danforth.
Turn left (east) onto Strathmore. My house is the last one on the block on the right side.
Coming from the Gardiner:
East
on the Gardiner. When the Gardiner ends, stay to the right and take the exit onto Lakeshore. Stay on Lakeshore going east
(past the Burger King and the Canadian Tire), and turn left (north) at the lights at Coxwell. Take Coxwell all the way up
past Danforth. Strathmore is immediately AFTER the Danforth lights, and you'll want to turn right (east). My house is the
last one on the block on the right side.
Taking the TTC:
Get off at Coxwell station on the Bloor line. When
you come out of the station you are ON Strathmore. Simply turn right and my house is the last one on the block on the
right side.

HALLOWINDOW- Interview by Rachel Brown of Haunt on the Hill
To read more about Rachel and her haunt go to www.hauntonthehill.com
Haunt on the Hill: Seeing
as how you are Canadian, do you get a lot of orders from Americans?
Mark: Actually, I’d say about 98% of my orders come from
the US. I like to think it has a lot to do with there being more temperate weather around Halloween down there and the
much higher population but it probably comes down to people having a ton of Halloween spirit. I’ve also been
getting more international orders outside of North America so it seems that haunting is spreading.
HotH: Have you ever thought about selling your DVDs at any
of the major haunt conventions?
Mark: I have thought about it and I’ve been invited to a
few down in the US but it usually comes down to not having the time to make it down. I did try to get some exposure
through the Canadian Haunters Convention this year and that was pretty cool.
HotH: Where do you get the ideas for your videos?
Mark: I guess they just sprout from the dark corners of my imagination.
I have a visual aesthetic that I like so that kind of guides me and I try to conceptualize ideas through sketches and notes.
I try to keep things simple and not too dark or grotesque but rather hint at those things. Some of the ideas are based
on the staging of a window, like the guy behind the curtain, and some ideas are more based on setting an atmosphere or a theme.
HotH: I saw you asking for ideas on facebook and I was the
person who said I hate seeing outside scenes on a window, it just doesn’t make sense!!! How do you balance what
everyone wants to see?
Mark: I try to take into account what people would like to see
but it’s impossible to please everyone. Since these projects are essentially self initiated I try to keep it interesting
and challenging for me in order to keep it fun and not feel too much like it’s a job. The outside/inside argument
is fair but I’m just taking inspiration from a bunch of different aspects of Halloween and creating a ride through a
variety of concepts. My single themed animations tend to work better as window specific illusions since they don’t
change perspective. I know people want to see more of that sort of thing so I’m working towards incorporating
as much of it as possible. Generally, if it passes the “I think that looks pretty cool” test it makes it
into the sequence.
HotH: I have been (im)patiently waiting for Hallowindow 4
to come out before I decide which DVD to order, yet you still refuse to give me a release date! Are you saying that you have
a life outside of Halloween and can’t say when this will be done?!?
Mark: Ha! Yup, life keeps chugging away and bills have to be paid
so my regular job and newborn son keeps me busy for most of the year. The latest release of Hallowindow will most likely
be hitting the scene late in September (like the past releases). Production has started earlier this year so hopefully that
means things will be wrapping sooner as well. I also hope to release some downloadable animations earlier than that
so keep your ear to the ground for that stuff. My facebook group, twitter feed and mailing list is the best place to get the
latest info. Thanks for spreading the word about Hallowindow, Rachel. I’m extremely gracious of the kind
words I’ve received over the past 3 years from fans and fellow haunters. Much respect to all.
Thanks Mark! And to anyone interested in Hallowindow, you can order the DVDs or find
out more info on the Hallowindow site.
